Time is running out to submit candidate nominations for the 2025 federal election.
The Australian Electoral Commission is reminding all candidates and political parties planning to contest the federal election that nominations must be returned by midday (local time) on Thursday 10 April 2025. For political parties, which are able to nominate candidates in bulk, the deadline is sooner – midday (local time) on Tuesday 8 April 2025.
The AEC released candidate nomination forms and guidance in January 2025, so there has been plenty of time for candidates and political parties to organise the required materials.
It is important for intending candidates to not just meet the nomination deadline but complete all the requirements, including the mandatory candidate qualification checklist.
Candidate qualification checklists help candidates to demonstrate that they are eligible to be elected to the Parliament under section 44 of the Constitution. Following the declaration of nominations, qualification checklists and other candidate information will be published on the AEC’s website.
The AEC does not have the power to reject a fully completed candidate nomination but reminds all candidates and parties that providing false information on a candidate qualification may be an offence.

The AEC will formally announce candidates and determine the order on ballot papers at public events held across Australia at midday (local time) on Friday 11 April 2025.
Each declaration of nominations event involves a blindfold, numbered balls and what is effectively a double-randomised ‘bingo’ system to keep the process of determining the order of candidates on the ballot paper fair.
The final number of candidates, and full candidate lists in ballot paper order, will be made available on the AEC website (and social media) on the evening of Friday 11 April 2025, once all data has been able to be inputted and verified.
Candidate qualification checklists will also be available on the AEC’s website in the days that follow.
