Enrolling to vote

If you are an Australian citizen and aged 18 years or over, you need to enrol and vote in federal elections, by-elections and referendums.

When you enrol for the first time, you will need to show who you are.

You can do this with:

  • Medicare card Your Medicare card, or
  • Drivers licence A driver’s licence, or
  • Australian passport An Australian passport, or
  • Citizenship certificate Citizenship certificate, or
  • Someone who is enrolled and can confirm your identity By having someone who is already enrolled who can confirm your identity.
