Suggestions period opens for Queensland’s federal redistribution

Updated: 16 September 2026

The independent committee responsible for redrawing Queensland's federal electorate boundaries has announced that suggestions from the public are now able to be submitted.

The boundaries are under review because the previous Queensland federal redistribution occurred more than seven years ago.

The suggestions period closes on 16 October 2026 but is just the first of multiple public consultation opportunities in which people can suggest alternative electorate boundaries or names.

Electoral Commissioner, and Queensland Redistribution Committee member, Jeff Pope said the committee is hoping for a high level of public engagement with the process to help inform its proposal.

"Noting the length of time since the last redistribution, population growth in that time and the need to balance numerical requirements for Queensland's thirty electorates, this redistribution is likely to lead to some significant boundary changes across the state," Mr Pope said.

"We want to hear people's suggestions for how that can be best achieved, and while the numerical requirements can be a little complex you don’t need to have experience with this kind of process to make a submission."

"It's about numbers first and foremost, but beyond that it's also a question of communities of interests and transport links, and who better to help inform that than people in those communities."

The redistribution process

  • The federal redistribution proposal is made by an independent committee that features both AEC and non-AEC members, with AEC secretariat staff providing administrative services for the process.
  • Throughout the entirety of the redistribution process, there will be at least four different periods of public input available for anyone to contribute thoughts or provide feedback.
  • Redistributions are undertaken to ensure that federal electorates contain similar numbers of electors, and that their boundaries reflect communities with shared interests.
  • Natural formations, transit links and community hubs are all considered under the guidelines when drawing up boundaries.
  • Following initial public consultation, a proposal is expected to be published in early 2027. Further public input will be called for in response to the proposal with final boundaries then likely to be announced sometime in mid-2027.
  • The federal redistribution relates to federal electorate boundaries only (federal House of Representatives seats). It is a separate process to the Electoral Commission of Queensland's state redistribution completed in June this year.
  • Further information is available about the redistribution process.

Making a suggestion

The AEC website includes advice on redistribution submissions guidelines, as well as a portal for submitting suggestions by 6pm Friday 16 October 2026.

All suggestions will be published on the Queensland redistribution webpage on Monday 19 October. Members of the public will then have a two-week period to submit a comment on published suggestions before the independent committee considers input and formulates a proposal.
