The deadline for feedback on the proposed renaming of the electorate of Franklin is tomorrow at 11:59pm.
The augmented Electoral Commission (the independent panel conducting the redistribution) today acknowledged recent public commentary regarding the proposed renaming of the reconfigured electorate of Franklin and the redistribution’s consultation process.
Panel member - and Electoral Commissioner - Jeff Pope said that engagement through the five phases of consultation so far has been instructive and encouraged continued engagement.
“The redistribution committee was quite deliberate - and specific - when calling for name suggestions rather than announcing a proposed name as part of February’s proposal,” Mr Pope said.
“Many suggestions were received, further comments made and people appeared at a public consultation session.”
“The next phase is now in full swing with people and organisations again able to contribute freely - but it does occur within legislated timeframes and methods that the independent commission must adhere to.”
“The process for renaming an electorate is a consultative one but the augmented Electoral Commission can only consider formal submissions, so we’ve been really encouraging people to submit by the deadline or register for the consultation session if they’d like to input.”
