Under the authority of section 316(3) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the Electoral Act) the AEC can undertake investigations of contraventions, or possible contraventions, of the civil penalty provisions of Part XX or relating to matters that are set out in, or are required to be set out in, a claim or return under Part XX. The AEC also undertakes investigations under the authority of section 316(3A) relating to whether an entity is, or was at a particular time, an associated entity. In addition to these investigations, the AEC undertakes informal enquiries into other disclosure matters of significant interest in the public domain. Outcomes of investigations and enquiries into matters in the public domain are detailed below.
