Named after Harold Edward Holt 1908–67, Prime Minister of Australia 1966–67, who disappeared while swimming off Portsea Beach in 1967.

Holt covers an area of approximately 145 sq km extending in a strip from Lysterfield South in the north to Cranbourne in the south. The main suburbs include Cranbourne, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Eumemmerring, Hallam, Hampton Park, Lynbrook, Narre Warren South and parts of Berwick, Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne East, Lyndhurst, Lysterfield, Lysterfield South, Narre Warren and Narre Warren North.
