Queensland
Named after Friedrich Leichhardt (1813–1848), explorer and scientist, who disappeared while attempting to cross the continent in 1848.
It covers an area of approximately 150 236 sq km from the Torres Strait Islands in the north to Edmonton in the south.
The main towns include Cairns, Coen, Cooktown, Edmonton, Kuranda, Mossman, Port Douglas, Thursday Island and Weipa.
Sugar, cattle, fishing, bauxite mining, ship-building and tourism.
