Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce publishes important information ahead of the next federal election

Updated: 20 January 2025

The purpose of the EIAT is to provide consolidated and coordinated information and advice to the Australian Electoral Commissioner on matters that may compromise the real or perceived integrity of a federal electoral event, which includes elections, by-elections and referendums.

The Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce (EIAT) has published important information ahead of the next federal election. The information will help voters and candidates understand the current electoral environment and the EIAT’s role in helping to protect the integrity of the election. This information is outlined across three documents:

  • Election Security Environment Overview provides a high-level overview of the complex and changing security environment in which the next federal election will occur. It outlines four threat vectors which can impact Australia’s federal election; foreign interference, physical security, cyber security, and misinformation and disinformation.
  • Complementing the Overview, A Candidate’s Guide to the Changing Electoral Environment collates a range of government resources available to prospective candidates, political parties and their party and campaign workers to help maintain awareness, stay safe, understand potential legal obligations, and report threats they may encounter.
  • The role of the EIAT includes providing advice to the Australian Electoral Commissioner on matters that may compromise the real or perceived integrity of federal electoral events. The EIAT Communication Protocol assists in guiding the EIAT in forming a view whether a briefing on a matter is required and if so, who might be briefed, including the Australian public.

EIAT Board Chair Dr Kath Gleeson said “this will ensure voters and candidates have access to important information about safeguarding the next federal election.” Dr Gleeson noted the EIAT was committed to assisting the Australian Electoral Commission in maintaining the high-level of trust Australian voters have in the integrity of Australian federal elections.

This information has been published on the EIAT website.
