Tasmanian federal redistribution deferred
Updated: 15 November 2024
The Australian Electoral Commission has deferred the scheduled redistribution of Tasmania’s federal electorates until after the next federal election.
The redistribution has been deferred as it is less than 12 months before the end of the current Parliament—and the next federal election.
Tasmania’s federal electorates had been due for a redistribution as it has been seven years since the state’s last redistribution. Following the deferral, Tasmania’s redistribution will now start within 30 days of the first meeting of the House of Representatives after the next federal election.
The deferral provides certainty for Tasmanians that the next federal election will be contested using the state’s existing electorates.

Editor’s notes:
- Tasmania’s redistribution will not change the state’s entitlement to five Members of the House of Representatives.
- Tasmania has a history of altering its state electoral boundaries to mirror the boundaries of its federal electorates. Questions about state electoral boundaries should be put to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
- The Electoral Act provides that a redistribution shall not commence within one year before the date of expiry of a House of Representatives by effluxion of time.
- The current House of Representatives is due to expire on 25 July 2025, however, a federal election for both the House of Representatives and half of the Senate must be held before late May 2025.
- Tasmania’s last redistribution of federal electorates was finalised on 14 November 2017.
