Deferral of federal redistribution for NSW

Updated: 1 March 2023

The Electoral Commission has deferred the scheduled redistribution of the New South Wales federal electorates until mid-2023.

Ordinarily, a redistribution would commence within 30 days after 26 February 2023. This is because at that date seven years will have passed since the last redistribution of the federal electorates in New South Wales.

Based on projected population figures provided by the Australian Statistician, the Electoral Commission considers there may be a change in the next few months in the number of members of the House of Representatives to be chosen in New South Wales. By law, however, the Electoral Commissioner’s determination of the number of members of the House of Representatives to be chosen in each state and territory cannot occur before 27 July 2023.

The Electoral Commission has therefore directed that the scheduled redistribution for New South Wales be deferred until after the upcoming determination of the number of members of the House of Representatives has been made by the Electoral Commissioner.

The deferral of the scheduled redistribution will not affect the outcome of the Electoral Commissioner’s determination of the number of members, which will be based on population figures to be provided by the Australian Statistician and which will have been published immediately prior to 27 July 2023.

As seven years has elapsed since the state’s last redistribution, a redistribution of federal electorates in New South Wales will commence in the second half of 2023 regardless of whether its number of electorates change.

Editor’s notes

  • New South Wales’ last redistribution of federal electorates was finalised on 25 February 2016, after the number of electorates was reduced from 48 to 47 seats.
  • The Electoral Commissioner’s determination of the number of members is made using population figures provided by the Australian Statistician, with the number of members of the House of Representatives calculated by dividing the population of each state and territory by a quota calculated in accordance with the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.
  • Visit AEC’s entitlement to electoral divisions page for information about this process.
  • A redistribution of federal electorates is not related to a state election. More information about the New South Wales state election is available from the New South Wales Electoral Commission.
