Total election public funding paid for the 2004 federal election was $41 926 158.91.
An initial payment of $39 815 891.18 was made in the first week of November 2004. This represented 95% of the amount due based on the votes counted by 29 October. The balance of $2 110 267.73 was paid when counting and verification of results was finalised in early December.
Candidates and Senate groups are eligible for election funding if they receive at least 4% cent of the formal first preference votes in the election they contested. Election funding is paid to the party where the candidate or Senate group is endorsed by a registered political party, and in other cases is paid direct to the candidate or Senate group (or their agent).
The rate of election funding for the 2004 federal election was 194.397 cents per formal first preference vote received.
