Name Derivation:

Named after Naval Lieutenant John Shortland (1769–1810), who discovered coal near Newcastle and the Hunter River Estuary.

Area and Location Description:

It covers an area of approximately 304 sq km from Charlestown in the north to Norah Head in the south and is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean and on the west by Lake Macquarie, the Pacific Highway, Wallarah Rd, Gorokan and the Canton Beach Foreshore.

The main suburbs include Belmont, Budgewoi, Catherine Hill Bay, Caves Beach, Chain Valley Bay, Charlestown, Doyalson, Dudley, Eleebana, Floraville, Gateshead, Gorokan, Gwandalan, Halekulani, Jewells, Kahibah, Lake Haven, Lake Munmorah, Mannering Park, Norah  Head, Noraville, Nords Wharf, Redhead, San Remo, Summerland Point, Swansea, Tingira Heights, Toukley, Valentine, Whitebridge and Windale.
