Victorian redistribution

6A. Inquiry into objections

Tuesday 13 August 2024

An inquiry is being held into objections to the proposed redistribution of electoral divisions in Victoria, as outlined in a report published by the Redistribution Committee for Victoria on Friday 31 May 2024.

At an inquiry, individuals or organisations may address the augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria on any matter raised in an objection to the proposed redistribution of Victoria or in a comment on these objections.

Matters raised in objections and comments on objections include the:

  • abolition of the Division of Higgins
  • boundary of the proposed Division of Wills
  • electoral division(s) in which the suburbs of Mernda and Wollert are located
  • boundaries of the proposed Divisions of Bruce, Holt and Isaacs
  • boundaries of the proposed Divisions of Aston, Deakin and Menzies
  • boundary of the proposed Divisions of Macnamara and Melbourne

Topics raised in objections and comments on objections that are not discussed at the inquiry will be considered by the augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria as part of its deliberations.

Details of the inquiry, to be convened by the augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria, are:

  • Date: Tuesday 13 August 2024
  • Starting time: 12:30pm AEST
  • Address: Adina Apartment Hotel, 189 Queen St, Melbourne VIC 3000

How to appear at an inquiry?

It is strongly recommended those wishing to appear make an appointment with the Victorian Redistribution Secretariat before 3pm AEST Monday 12 August 2024

The Redistribution Secretariat will take your name, contact details and the topics to be spoken about at the inquiry.

These details are only intended to:

  • provide an indication of the likely number of attendees,
  • be used to contact attendees if there are last minute changes to plans, and
  • enable the augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria to re-read relevant objections and comments on objections prior to the inquiry.

How will the inquiry operate?

The inquiry will follow a schedule, with speakers allocated five minutes to speak to the augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria. On advising the secretariat of an intention to address the augmented Electoral Commission, speakers will be advised of an approximate appearance time. It is therefore requested those wishing to address the augmented Electoral Commission arrive 15 minutes prior to their allocated time.

The time the inquiry will end is dependent on the number of participants appearing on the day.

To enable all those who are interested to participate and express their views, it is requested that participants speak for no more than five minutes. Additional time to speak may be made available if time permits.

Participating in the inquiry is an opportunity to provide additional information on the topics listed above which is not contained within the written objections or comments on objections. The augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria will not be addressing the reasoning behind the Redistribution Committee’s proposal.

Audio-visual presentation facilities will not be provided at the inquiry.

A transcript will be taken of the inquiry and will be published at a later date.

Should circumstances change, alternative arrangements for the inquiry will be published on this web page. It is recommended you refer to this web page prior to the inquiry as changes could occur at very short notice.

For further information about the inquiry or the redistribution process, please contact the Redistribution Secretariat or visit www.aec.gov.au/redistributions.

The views expressed in the material reproduced above are those of the individuals or organisations who lodged the comment on objections, not the Victorian Redistribution Committee or the AEC.
