Tasmanian redistribution

0. Deferral of redistribution

The Acting Electoral Commissioner has announced the redistribution of Tasmania’s five electoral divisions will not commence until after the House of Representatives in the 48th Parliament has met for the first time.

The deferral is required by the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the Electoral Act) as the commencement falls within the last 12 months of the 47th Parliament.

The next redistribution of federal electoral divisions in Tasmania is therefore expected to begin in 2025, not in November or December 2024.

Basis for deferral

Section 59 of the Electoral Act sets out the requirements for the Tasmanian redistribution to be determined.
