Availability of comments on the objections to Queensland’s Federal Electoral Redistribution Proposal

7 August 2006

The Australian Electoral Officer for Queensland, Ms Anne Bright, announced today that comments from individuals and other parties on previously submitted objections to the proposed redistribution of Queensland’s Federal Electoral Boundaries were now publicly available.

This information is available for public inspection at the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) State Office in Brisbane and on the AEC’s website at www.aec.gov.au.

Ms Bright said that the augmented Electoral Commission for Queensland would now consider all the objections and comments before finalising the redistribution.

“If the augmented Commission’s view is significantly different from the Redistribution Committee’s proposal, further consultation may occur with the public,” Ms Bright said.

"The redrawing of the State’s federal electoral boundaries has been a consultative process to ensure that each of Queensland’s electoral divisions has, as near as possible, contain the same number of electors, consistent with the provisions of the Commonwealth Electoral Act" Ms Bright said.

The augmented Electoral Commission will make the final determination of the boundaries and names of the 29 electoral divisions for Queensland.

A range of information regarding the redistribution process is available via the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au or from the AEC’s Brisbane office on (07) 3834 3431.
