South Australian Federal Electoral Redistribution

5 September 2003

The Redistribution Committee for South Australia today published details of its proposed new boundaries for federal electoral divisions in South Australia.

Because the State's entitlement in the House of Representatives has reduced from 12 to 11 seats, the Redistribution Committee has proposed new boundaries for 11 federal electoral divisions.

Inevitably, low population growth in country South Australia has resulted in comparatively large increases in area for the Divisions of Grey and Barker.

Major changes were necessary in Adelaide's northern and eastern suburbs to satisfy elector quota requirements for the electoral Divisions of Wakefield and, to a lesser extent, Mayo. Consequently the electoral Division of Bonython has been abolished and its electors redistributed to surrounding divisions, in particular to the Division of Wakefield.

Consistent with its statutory obligations, the Redistribution Committee aimed to minimise the number of electors transferred between electoral divisions.  Other divisions have been minimally changed by the Committee's proposal.

In developing its proposal, the Committee considered the many suggestions and comments submitted by interested members of the public and organisations.  The opportunity now exists for individuals and organisations to lodge objections against the proposed new boundaries.  Objections must be lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission by 6.00pm on Friday, 3 October 2003 at Level 9, 1 King William Street, (GPO Box 344), Adelaide.
