Who can vote before election day?

If on election day you’ll be outside the electorate of Gippsland you should vote before you leave at an early voting centre or by post. You will not be able to vote outside the electorate of Gippsland on election day.

If you’ll be overseas on election day, you should vote at an early voting centre before you leave Australia or by post. There are no overseas voting arrangements at Australian embassies or missions.

What if I have another reason why I can’t vote on election day?

If you can’t get to a polling place on election day, you may also be eligible to vote beforehand if you:

  • are more than 8km from a polling place in your state or territory
  • are approaching childbirth
  • have a serious illness or care for someone who is ill
  • have religious beliefs that prevent you from attending a polling place on election day
  • are working or travelling on election day.

Ways to vote before election day

If eligible, you can vote before election day at an early voting centre or by post.

At an early voting centre or AEC office

Vote in person before election day at an early voting centre in the electorate of Gippsland.

You can also vote at any AEC divisional office Australia wide. Find the AEC divisional office nearest you.

Ballot papers will be sent to postal voters from the week commencing 9 June. 

Completed ballot papers must be postmarked before 6pm on election day, 28 June, or your vote cannot be counted.  

Make sure your vote counts in the by-election

Voting is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 years and over and enrolled to vote in the electorate of Gippsland. Unlike state elections, this includes people aged 70 years and over. If you do not vote and do not have a good reason, you may face a penalty.
