Postal voters urged to return their vote in Gippsland by-election

25 June 2008

The Australian Electoral Commission is urging Victorian electors who are intending to cast a postal vote in the Gippsland by-election to return their completed ballot papers without delay.

The Divisional Returning Officer for Gippsland, Mr David Wakely, reminded electors to make sure their completed postal ballot papers are in the mail to the AEC before election day on Saturday, 28 June, so that they are received in time to be counted.

“Time is fast running out for electors who still wish to vote by post but haven’t yet applied.  At this late stage, I would encourage these electors to consider whether they are able to vote in person at one of the Early Voting Centres located in Bairnsdale, Morwell and Sale – rather than applying for a postal vote.  You can also vote early at any AEC Divisional Office across the country.”

“If voting by post is the only option, you need to get a postal vote application form available from www.aec.gov.au, any AEC office or Australia Post outlet or by calling 13 23 26 and send your application form to the AEC today,” Mr Wakely said.

Electors are eligible for an early or postal vote if on election day they will be interstate or overseas; approaching childbirth; seriously ill or caring for someone who is seriously ill; unable to attend a polling place due to religious beliefs, disability or work commitments, or will not be within 8km of a polling place.
