Proposal for the Northern Territory Federal Electoral Redistribution published
The report detailing the proposed boundaries for the Northern Territory’s federal electoral divisions was released today by the Redistribution Committee for the Northern Territory.
The Electoral Commissioner and Chair of the Committee, Mr Ian Campbell, said the redistribution of the federal boundaries was required because 7 years had elapsed since the last redistribution of the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory retains 2 federal electorates: the Division of Lingiari and the Division of Solomon.
The Redistribution Committee concluded that the existing land boundaries for the two divisions should remain unchanged and proposed extending the water boundaries around the Division of Solomon to substantially align with the Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield Municipal boundaries.
The full details of the Northern Territory Redistribution Committee’s proposal, including the Committee’s considerations in making the proposal, are in its report available on the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au.
Mr Campbell said that the consultative nature of the redistribution process continues with individuals and organisations now able to lodge objections to the Committee’s proposed redistribution.
Written objections must be lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission before 6.00pm on Friday 18 July 2008:
- in person at Level 7, TCG Centre, 80 Mitchell Street, Darwin NT 0800, or
- by mail to GPO Box 21, Darwin NT 0801, or
- by email to nt.redistribution@aec.gov.au, or
- by facsimile to (08) 8981 7964.
All objections received by the deadline will be available for public inspection and comment at the AEC State Office in Darwin and on the AEC website from Monday 21 July 2008.
A redistribution is a redrawing of electoral boundaries to ensure that, as far as practicable, there are the same number of electors in each division within the territory or state. The Redistribution Committee also takes into account community of interests, communication and transport links, physical features, and current federal boundaries when making its proposal.
